Enzo Angles European Junior Champion!
After an easy final in straight games against Croatian Tomislav Pucar, STIGA´s Enzo Angles captured the junior singles title at the European Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
But to get to the finals Enzo had to fight hard. Three matches went full distance. Still, at the end in each of them Enzo showed he was the best and had the strongest will.
“I stayed on track after some hard matches before the finals”, Enzo Angles said after securing the title. “Finally gold, but it was a though journey.”
The long trip to the gold medal started with 4-0 against David Henkens, Belgium. Then Enzo had three tough matches in a row, all in seven games, but even though he was never really close to lose. He was in the lead 3-1 or 3-2 in all matches, and won the seventh and decisive game quite clearly in all of them: 11-4 against Khatchanov of the Netherlands, 11-5 versus Filip Zeljko, Croatia, and also 11-5 against Adam Szudi of Hungary in the quarter’s finals.
In the semi´s Enzo Angles had to face Joao Geraldo of Portugal. Enzo won the first at 6 and the second at 9. Lost the third and the fourth with 4-11 and 12-14, but finally finishing strongly – 11-9, 11-6.
“I had a better start in this match, but he was not an easy player to beat”, Enzo commented on the the semifinals against the Portuguese. “Geraldo did not give up. He started to play spin on me first, so it was very difficult to overcome him. At 2-2 in games I started to serve half long serves. I came closer to the table and played more aggressive. It proved to be a good tactics.”
The final was as clear as against the Belgian David Henkens in the first round of the singles tournament. 4-0: 11-6, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5.
And so STIGA got a new champion. Enzo Angles his biggest title so far.
And France defended the championships that Tristan Flore, injured and not participating in Ostrava, won both 2011 and 2012.
Guo Yue´s tenth title at the Worlds!
The STIGA-contracted Chinese won the doubles finals at the World Championships in Paris teaming Li Xiaoxia. They beat Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen, also China, in the finals 4-1 to capture their third World Champion title in a row.
Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia were quite superior to their opponents in Paris. Three set they dropped on their way to their third title. The hardest battle was in the semi finals against Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu from Singapore, where the Chinese champions won 4-2.
In the Finals the first game looked a little tensioned from Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia, who lost it 5-11. Then they showed their Chinese comrades no mercy: 11-5, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7.
“We played good and know each other extremely well”, Guo Yue explained the victory afterwards. “We have been playing together for ten years now, and we also come from the same town in China, Anshan in Liaoning province. This fact gives us confidence in the game.”
But one more thing could have been decisive for winning the third title.
“We stayed up late, ´til one o clock, last night.
“Yes we were watching videos. We analyzed our game and the game of Liu Shiwen and Ding Ning. This was important for our performance. We felt we had done everything we could do in our preparation.”
This was the tenth time Guo Yue became World Champion. Ten titles is one of the highest scores in the Worlds table tennis history. Besides the three doubles titles with Li Xiaoxia, Guo Yue also has won the Worlds team title four times (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2012) the mixed title twice (2005, 2007), and in 2007 Guo Yue also won the biggest title, the Singles title.
